Pantry Design

Whether you are embarking on a new build or refurbishing a tired kitchen space, you need to be aware of some important design considerations when planning the pantry. Careful planning is needed to avoid living with a disfunctional pantry, located at an inconvenient corner of the room !

To ensure your kitchen looks great and functions effectively, plan your pantry !

Here are some simple but essential "Pantry Design Tips".

Key attributes of a great pantry are convenience, accessibility and visibility.

Location! Location! Location!

Use your kitchen real estate wisely. Pantry location in relation to the other elements in the kitchen is crucial. A well-designed pantry put in the wrong place, impairs the efficiency of cooking functions. Check your kitchen "work triangle" and ensure the pantry integrates efficiently.

Location of the Refrigerator

From a practical point of view it is better to place cold storage (refrigerator) fairly close to dry storage (pantry), so that multiple trips are not required to gather the ingredients for a meal.

Position close to bench space

Pantries need to be positioned adjacent to bench preparation and landing zones. The preparation zone is bench space used for meal preparation. The landing zone is bench space for depositing grocery items.

Snack and Beverage Centre

Access to "between-meal" snacks without entering the main part of the kitchen, reduces kitchen traffic and interference with the meal preparation and cleaning areas. If at all possible, the pantry and refrigerator should be located on an edge of the kitchen that can be reached without traversing the main kitchen working area.

Storage

Items should be stored where they are first used. Size storage to the items being stored. For efficient use of space, store items in a single layer with no item hidden behind or beneath another.

Shelving

Deep shelves in a walk-in or walk-through pantry are no more useful than deep shelves in a reach-in pantry.

Lighting

The ideal lighting illuminates the contents of every shelf evenly. Dark corners and shelves tend to gather "out of date" items. Yuck !
